Time-Temperature Studies in the Distribution of Fresh Fish in Summer

This report describes a temperature survey of fresh fish between the coastal market and the retailer. Over 5,000 temperature measurements were made during the summer months which was an unusually hot summer. These measurements highlight the problem areas in temperature control throughout the distribution chain and shows that fresh fish however good it may be at the points of landing much of it is progressively downgraded or even ruined in quality by the time it reaches the consumer. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish

    B8_Uni of Wales_Hydrodredge

Scallop dredges typically use teeth or a cutting bar to dig through the sediment and are associated with detrimental impacts on marine benthos. A novel ‘Hydrodredge’ designed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for use in the New England fishery for giant scallop Placopecten magellanicus has the potential to exert far less damaging effects on the seabed and its biota (Goudey, 2006). Instead of mechanical means, the new gear uses precisely oriented ‘cups’ that deflect water into a downward jet and creates large-scale vorticity, a combination that exerts sufficient force on the seabed to lift scallops into the water column whereupon they can be captured by the trailing net/chain bag. The results were encouraging, and led to a more thorough evaluation of the Hydrodredge in the Isle of Man fishery during August 2007, being the subject of this report.
